About Zainab Salbi

Activism was still reshaping global conversations when Zainab Salbi stepped into the spotlight to tell stories that mattered most.

Zainab Salbi was born in 1969 in Baghdad, Iraq, into a world of privilege and danger. Her father became a personal pilot to Saddam Hussein. This proximity to power came with a price she did not choose to pay.

Her family saw the threat early. When Hussein began showing unwanted attention to her, her parents made a difficult decision. They arranged her marriage and her emigration to the United States. It was meant to protect her. It was also meant to save her life.

America was not the sanctuary she expected. Her marriage in the U.S. turned abusive. She endured what many women suffer in silence. But Salbi chose a different path. She divorced her husband and refused to stay broken.

In 2001, she co-founded Women for Women International, a non-profit organization helping women affected by sexual violence and conflict. The work expanded across continents. It reached women in war zones and crisis areas. Her mission became clear: amplify the voices of survivors.

She documented these stories in her 2005 memoir, Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam. The book revealed her journey from Baghdad to freedom. It also became a testament to resilience. In The Other Side of War: Women's Stories of Survival & Hope, she shifted focus to other women's narratives.

Television became her platform. She hosted Through Her Eyes and #MeToo, Now What?, shows addressing issues affecting women worldwide. Starting in 2022, she launched the Redefined podcast. Her voice reached audiences hungry for truth.

In September 2023, Time magazine honored her with the Time100 Impact Award. The recognition reflected decades of work. She later co-founded Daughters for Earth, a movement and fund mobilizing women globally with climate solutions. Zainab Salbi had transformed her trauma into purpose. She had built a legacy bigger than herself.
