About Fuel Prices in Nigeria
Nigeria's petroleum product prices are now largely deregulated following the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Prices are determined by market forces, the cost of crude oil, exchange rates and logistics costs.
Why Do Fuel Prices Vary by State?
Fuel prices across Nigeria's 36 states and FCT differ based on transportation costs from depots, local demand, availability of filling stations, and independent marketers' pricing decisions. States closer to refineries or major fuel depots like Lagos, Port Harcourt and Warri tend to have lower prices, while northern and remote states pay more due to logistics costs.
NNPCL vs Independent Marketers
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) operates filling stations across the country and typically sells at a lower reference price. Independent marketers operating under IPMAN (Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria) may charge more depending on supply conditions.
How to Save on Fuel Costs
Buy fuel early in the morning when temperatures are cooler (fuel is denser), fill up at NNPCL stations where possible, avoid topping up repeatedly (reduces spillage), maintain your vehicle regularly for better fuel efficiency, and consider carpooling for long trips.
