Yusuf Alli was born on July 28, 1960, in Lagos. He grew up in Nigeria's largest city, where athletic ambition ran as deep as the lagoon itself.
His breakthrough came at the University of Missouri. Alli jumped for the Mizzou Tigers in the early 1980s, setting indoor and outdoor long jump records that still stand today—marks he posted in 1983 and 1984.
Lagos hosted the 1989 African Championships in Athletics. Alli soared 8.27 metres that day, a distance that became the Nigerian national record and showcased his talent on the continental stage.
