The first Black Rhodes Professor at Oxford. That distinction alone placed Walé Adebanwi among Nigeria's most accomplished scholars.

Born in 1969, Adebanwi carved a path few Nigerians have traveled. His career took him from Nigeria to the world's most prestigious universities, where he became a leading voice on African studies.

At St Antony's College, Oxford, Adebanwi served as Professor of Race Relations. He also directed the African Studies Centre at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies. His work shaped how scholars understood the continent's complex histories and contemporary challenges.

His research spans wide terrain. He examined social change, nationalism and ethnicity across Africa. Identity politics, elites, cultural politics and the democratic process all fell within his academic purview. Adebanwi also studied the newspaper press and spatial politics, revealing how media shaped African societies.

In June 2021, Adebanwi moved to the University of Pennsylvania. He took the title of Presidential Penn Compact Professor of Africana Studies. The appointment reflected his standing as one of Africa's foremost intellectual voices.
