Max Verstappen won four consecutive Formula One World Drivers' Championship titles from 2021 to 2024. Yet most Nigerians know him simply as the fastest man on four wheels, the Dutch driver who dominated the sport like few others ever have.
Max Emilian Verstappen was born on September 30, 1997, in Hasselt, Belgium. His father, Jos Verstappen, was a former Formula One driver. His mother, Sophie Kumpen, raced karts for Belgium. Racing was not a choice for young Max—it was in his blood.
The family moved to Maaseik while Max was still a boy. He began his karting career early and became a record-breaker by his teenage years. His 2013 season in karts was so dominant that it rewrote the history books. Scouts from the biggest racing teams were watching.
At just 17 years old, Verstappen signed with Toro Rosso in 2015 as part of the Red Bull Junior Team. That same year, he became the youngest driver ever to compete in Formula One at the Australian Grand Prix. The record stood as a testament to his raw talent and fearlessness.
In 2016, Red Bull promoted him to their main team after only four races with Toro Rosso. On his debut for Red Bull, aged 18, Verstappen won the Spanish Grand Prix. He became the youngest driver ever to win a Formula One race. The motorsport world took notice immediately.
Through 2017 and 2018, Verstappen racked up multiple race wins. He finished third in the World Drivers' Championship in both 2019 and 2020. Success was coming, but the titles had not yet arrived.
Then came 2021. Verstappen claimed his first championship. He won again in 2022, 2023, and 2024—four titles in a row. Across his 12 seasons in Formula One, he has won 71 Grand Prix races.
Today, Verstappen stands as one of racing's greatest talents. His journey from a small Belgian town to four-time world champion remains one of sport's most remarkable stories.
