The blueprint for African entrepreneurship was being drawn when Tony Elumelu took the helm of United Bank for Africa in 2010.

Anthony Onyemaechi Elumelu was born on March 22, 1963. His career would reshape how Nigeria's financial sector operated and how African economies could be unlocked.

Elumelu built his reputation as an economist and banker with a rare skill: seeing what others missed. He understood that Africa's greatest resource was not oil or minerals. It was her people and their untapped potential.

His leadership at United Bank for Africa transformed the institution into a continental powerhouse. But banking was only the beginning. Elumelu wanted to build something larger—a movement that could shift the trajectory of an entire continent.

In 2010, he founded The Tony Elumelu Foundation. The Foundation's TEF Entrepreneurship Programme became a catalyst for African job creation. It has since supported thousands of young entrepreneurs across Africa who had dreams but no access to capital. The programme offered mentorship, funding and business training.

Beyond banking and philanthropy, Elumelu chairs Heirs Holdings and Transcorp. His business interests span real estate, agriculture and energy. Each venture was designed with one question in mind: how does this create opportunity for Africans?

In 2020, Time magazine included Elumelu in its list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The recognition confirmed what many already knew. His philosophy of "Africapitalism"—the belief that African prosperity must be built by Africans themselves—had become a guiding principle for a new generation of business leaders.

Today, Elumelu stands at the intersection of economics, banking and social change. His work proved that profit and purpose are not opposites. They are partners in building the Africa of tomorrow.
