Polytetrafluoroethylene, commonly known as Teflon, emerged from a DuPont laboratory in 1938. The synthetic compound revolutionized how Nigerians approached cooking. What started as a chemical invention became an everyday necessity in homes from Abuja to Port Harcourt.

The discovery changed everything. Chemours, a spin-off from DuPont, took ownership of the brand and its potential. They understood what Nigerian homemakers needed: cookware that didn't stick, that didn't fail, that made life simpler.

Teflon's success rested on a simple truth. The fluoropolymer is hydrophobic—water cannot wet it. This property alone made it the most practical choice for non-stick coating on pans and cookware. Nigerian families embraced it instantly.

The applications grew beyond the kitchen. Industries in Nigeria and worldwide discovered Teflon's versatility. As a lubricant, it reduced friction in machinery. Hospitals used it as a graft material in surgery and coating on catheters. In chemical plants, its non-reactivity made it essential for containers holding corrosive substances.

The numbers told the story. Teflon occupied more than half of all fluoropolymer production globally. Its carbon-fluorine bonds were so strong that nothing could break them down easily. This made it invaluable in pipework for reactive chemicals across Nigerian manufacturing sectors.

By the 2000s, questions emerged about the cost of progress. DuPont had used perfluorooctanoic acid during production for decades. Environmental concerns mounted as scientists identified PFAS chemicals as persistent organic pollutants. The company eventually discontinued the practice.

Today, Teflon remains embedded in Nigerian culture. From a grandmother's frying pan in Yaba to industrial equipment in Lekki, the fluoropolymer shaped how a nation worked and ate. What began as a chemical compound became more than that—it became part of daily life, a quiet revolution that nobody announced but everyone needed.
