Skales
About Skales
"Shake Body" was still getting spins across Lagos radio when Skales cemented himself as one of Nigeria's most consistent rappers.
Raoul John Njeng-Njeng was born on April 1, 1991. Better known as Skales—an acronym for "Seek Knowledge Acquire Large Entrepreneurial Skills"—he started writing rap songs in Kaduna while still in secondary school. The young artist was hungry to learn the craft and improve his sound.
In 2007 and 2008, Skales travelled to Jos to work with producers Jesse Jagz and Jeremiah Gyang. These collaborations sharpened his skills and exposed him to different production styles. By 2008, he entered the Zain Tru Search competition and won the North Central region. His debut single, "Must Shine," followed and received consistent airplay on Rhythm FM stations in Lagos, Jos and Abuja.
The success led him to Lagos in 2009. That same year, he signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E), one of Nigeria's most respected labels at the time. His time with E.M.E proved fruitful as he released hit after hit.
Songs like "Shake Body," "Mukulu," and "Keresimesi" became party staples across the country. "Komole," "My Baby," "Take Care of Me" and "Denge Pose" followed, each one earning him radio rotation and streaming numbers. Skales had become a reliable hitmaker in the Nigerian music industry.
In May 2014, Skales left E.M.E to pursue independence. He set up his own record label, OHK Music, to have creative control over his projects. This move reflected his entrepreneurial spirit and desire to build his own empire.
His debut studio album, Man of the Year, arrived in 2015. The project showcased his growth as an artist and his ability to craft cohesive bodies of work. Skales had proven he could succeed both as a label artist and as an independent entrepreneur.
