The call to prayer echoed across northern Nigeria when Dahiru Usman was born on June 29, 1927. His name would become synonymous with Islamic scholarship in the country for nearly a century.

Usman devoted his life to the Tijaniyyah, a Sufi Islamic order that shaped spiritual practice across West Africa. He became one of Nigeria's most prominent Islamic scholars, respected in mosques and universities alike. His teachings drew followers from across the nation.

Throughout his decades of work, Usman established himself as a leading voice in Islamic education and practice. The Tijaniyyah brotherhood flourished under his guidance in Nigeria. He connected traditional Islamic learning with contemporary Nigerian society.

His contributions to Nigerian Islam earned him the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) honour. This recognition acknowledged his decades of scholarly work and spiritual leadership. Few Islamic scholars in Nigeria achieved such official recognition.

Usman's influence extended beyond the pulpit into the everyday lives of Nigerian Muslims. He shaped how generations understood Islamic law and Sufi tradition. His students became teachers themselves, spreading his teachings across regions.

He remained active in Islamic scholarship and teaching well into his final years. On November 26, 2025, at age 98, Dahiru Usman passed away. Nigeria lost a bridge between traditional Islamic knowledge and the modern world.

His legacy rests in the thousands of students he mentored and the communities he guided spiritually. The Tijaniyyah order in Nigeria continues his work today. Dahiru Usman's name remains etched in the history of Nigerian Islam.
