About Seyi Makinde
Seyi Makinde has governed Oyo State since 2019. As Nigeria's Governor, he steers one of the country's most historically significant southwestern states.
Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde was born on December 25, 1967. He is an engineer by training and a subject matter expert on fluid and gas metering. His career path took him through international oil and gas companies where he accumulated years of work experience.
At age 29, in 1997, Makinde established his first private business. Makon Engineering and Technical Services (METS) launched his entrepreneurial journey. The venture proved successful in Nigeria's competitive energy sector.
His business grew substantially over the years. Makinde became the group managing director of Makon Group Limited, an indigenous oil and gas company. The company positioned him among Nigeria's notable business leaders in the energy industry.
Before his gubernatorial victory, Makinde tested the political waters. He contested for the 2015 Oyo State gubernatorial election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Though he lost that race, the experience prepared him for another attempt.
His second gubernatorial bid succeeded. In 2019, Makinde was elected Governor of Oyo State. He transitioned from the boardroom to the seat of power in one of Nigeria's most prominent states.
As Governor, Makinde brings his engineering expertise and business acumen to governance. His background in oil and gas metering and management informs his approach to state administration. The combination of technical knowledge and entrepreneurial experience shapes his leadership style.
Makinde's journey reflects a common path in modern Nigerian politics. Engineers and businessmen increasingly move into public service. His career demonstrates how private sector success translates into political ambition and electoral victory.
