About Segun Mimiko

Olusegun Mimiko served as Governor of Ondo State from 2012 to 2020. His eight-year tenure reshaped the southwestern state's political landscape and made him a significant figure in Nigeria's democratic evolution.

Segun Mimiko was born in 1954. He studied law and built a career as a lawyer before entering electoral politics. His legal training shaped his approach to governance.

He ran for president in 2011 under the Labour Party. Though unsuccessful, the campaign elevated his national profile. Two years later, he won the gubernatorial election and took office in February 2012.

His administration focused on healthcare, education and infrastructure. He launched the Ondo Health Insurance Scheme to expand medical access. Schools across the state received renovation and funding during his tenure.

Mimiko's leadership style emphasised dialogue with stakeholders. He worked with traditional rulers and community leaders on development projects. His approach earned him respect across party lines in Ondo State.

He supported the Southern governors' forum on critical national issues. This group addressed regional concerns and coordinated policies among states in southern Nigeria.

In 2020, Mimiko stepped down after two terms as governor. He had completed the constitutional limit for the office. His successor, Rotimi Akeredolu, took over.

After leaving office, Mimiko remained visible in national political conversations. He continued practising law and offered commentary on governance and democracy. Ondo State's trajectory during his governorship remained a reference point in discussions about his political career.
