About Sauti Sol
Live and Die in Afrika was released as a free download for just 48 hours in 2015. That bold move summed up Sauti Sol perfectly—a Kenyan afropop band willing to break the rules.
The band formed in Nairobi in 2005. Vocalists Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, and Savara Mudigi started as an a cappella group before guitarist Polycarp Otieno joined them. They adopted the name Sauti Sol, which means "sound of the sun" in Swahili.
Their debut album Mwanzo dropped on November 1, 2008, to critical acclaim. The record announced their arrival on Kenya's music scene with unmistakable force. It established them as more than just another boy band.
Sol Filosofia arrived on February 25, 2011. The second studio album earned the group numerous accolades and nominations across East Africa. That year, they performed with South African a cappella legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Kenya. The collaboration proved they could hold their own alongside international acts.
By 2012, Sauti Sol was ready to work with bigger names. They released a self-titled extended play with South African rapper and producer Spoek Mathambo on June 18, 2012. The project showed their willingness to experiment beyond traditional afropop sounds.
Their tours across Africa and Europe built a loyal fanbase far beyond Kenya. They topped Kenyan charts repeatedly. Television appearances in Europe and the US brought their music to new audiences. Nominations arrived from the Kisima Music Awards, Channel O Music Video Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, and the BET Awards.
Live and Die in Afrika landed on November 21, 2015. The free 48-hour release strategy generated massive buzz. It reinforced Sauti Sol's reputation as innovators who refused to follow the industry playbook.
The band's journey from Nairobi a cappella group to international touring act remains one of East Africa's biggest success stories. Their music blended traditional sounds with modern production. Sauti Sol proved that Kenyan artists could compete at the highest levels of the global music industry.
