About Orji Uzor Kalu
The Senate chamber in Abuja gained a familiar face when Orji Uzor Kalu took his seat as senator representing Abia North Senatorial District. But politics was only one chapter in his story.
Kalu was born on April 21, 1960. By the time Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, he had already built considerable wealth in business. The transition from boardroom to statehouse came naturally.
He served as governor of Abia State from May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007. Eight years shaped his political career and his home state. When his tenure ended, he had cemented himself as a major figure in Nigerian politics.
Before stepping into the governor's mansion, Kalu had held key posts in finance and banking. He served as chairman of the Borno Water Board and later chairman of the Cooperative and Commerce Bank Limited. These roles built his reputation as a capable administrator.
His ambitions extended beyond Abia. In 2007, the Progressive Peoples Alliance chose him as their presidential candidate for the April general election. The bid for the nation's highest office positioned him among Nigeria's political heavyweights.
Kalu's business empire grew alongside his political career. He became chairman of SLOK Holding, a diversified company with interests across multiple sectors. He also owns the Daily Sun and New Telegraph newspapers, giving him significant influence over Nigeria's media landscape.
Party loyalty shifted over the years. Kalu moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Progressive Peoples Alliance, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He eventually joined the All Progressive Congress, the country's ruling party.
In 2019, Kalu returned to electoral politics. Running on the APC platform, he contested for the Abia North Senate seat. He defeated incumbent senator Mao Ohuabunwa by over 10,000 votes, securing his place in the National Assembly. The victory marked a new chapter in a career spanning business, governance and representation.
