About Olusoji Fasuba

# Olusoji Fasuba: Nigeria's Sprint Legend Who Rewrote African Records

The roar at the Valencia track in 2008 was deafening. Olusoji Fasuba had just crossed the finish line in the 60 metres indoor final, claiming the world championship title. He became the first African ever to achieve this feat.

Olusoji Adetokunbo Fasuba was born on July 9, 1984. The Nigerian sprinter would go on to specialize in the 100 metres, an event that would define his career and cement his place in African athletics history.

His breakthrough came at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Fasuba anchored Nigeria's 4 × 100 metres relay team to a bronze medal. That same year, he won the African Championships in 100 metres, announcing himself as a force on the continent.

By 2006, Fasuba was competing against the world's best. At the Commonwealth Games, he clocked a silver medal finish, running behind Jamaica's Asafa Powell. The performance showed he belonged at the highest level of international competition.

In 2008, Fasuba etched his name into the record books. His indoor world championship victory over 60 metres made history. No African sprinter had ever claimed a world indoor title before. The achievement resonated across the continent and inspired a generation of young Nigerian athletes.

Fasuba's greatest individual honour came as the African record holder in the 100 metres with a time of 9.85 seconds. He carried this record with pride for over a decade. Only in July 2021 did South African sprinter Akani Simbine break it, running 9.84 seconds.

His legacy transcends his records and medals. Fasuba represented Nigeria on the world's biggest stages with distinction. He competed when African sprinting was still finding its voice on the global stage. Today, his contributions remain a benchmark for Nigerian track and field excellence.
