About Obadele Thompson
The bronze medal gleamed under the Sydney lights when Obadele Thompson crossed the line in the 100 metres at the 2000 Olympics. That third-place finish made history. Thompson had just delivered Barbados's first and only Olympic medal as an independent country.
Obadele "Oba" Thompson was born on March 30, 1976, in Barbados. His island home had never produced an Olympic medallist before. He would change that trajectory forever.
Thompson's speed showed early at the University of Texas-El Paso. Between 1996 and 1997, he won four individual NCAA sprint titles—the indoor 200 metres twice, plus the outdoor 100 and 200 metres. He set two NCAA records during his college years. In 1996, he ran 9.69 seconds in the 100 metres, then the fastest 100m recorded under all conditions.
The records kept coming. In 1997, Thompson set the world record in the 55 metres indoors at 5.99 seconds. That record still stands today. He was an eleven-time NCAA All-American and a sixteen-time Western Athletic Conference Champion. His college accolades included UTEP Athlete of the Year in 1996 and 1997. The USTFCCCA named him NCAA Division I Male Indoor Athlete of the Year in 1997.
Thompson became a three-time Olympian, competing in 1996, 2000, and 2004. He reached the finals at each Olympics. His personal bests remain Barbadian records: 9.87 seconds in the 100 metres and 19.97 seconds in the 200 metres.
After hanging up his spikes, Thompson traded the track for the courtroom. He became a lawyer, using his education and discipline in a new arena. Writing and speaking followed. Thompson authored works and took the stage as a motivational speaker, sharing lessons from his athletic journey.
Today, Obadele Thompson stands as a multifaceted professional. He is a former sprinter, lawyer, author, and speaker. That Sydney medal remains Barbados's proudest Olympic moment, a symbol of what one athlete's dedication can achieve on the world's biggest stage.
