About Nyesom Wike

As Minister of the Federal Capital Territory since 2023, Nyesom Wike oversees one of Nigeria's most strategically important regions. The appointment marked a new chapter in a political career that has already spanned over two decades.

Ezenwo Nyesom Wike was born on December 13, 1967, in Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor, in Rivers State's southern region. He is an ethnic Ikwerre and a graduate of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, where he studied law.

His political rise began in 1999 when he was elected Executive Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area. He served two consecutive terms in this position until 2007, building a reputation for grassroots administration and development projects.

In 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Wike as Minister of State for Education on July 14. He later became Acting Minister of Education after Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufa'i's departure, though he stepped down to pursue his gubernatorial ambitions.

Wike won the Rivers State gubernatorial election on April 11, 2015, defeating Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress and Tonye Princewill of the Labour Party. His victory came after winning the Peoples Democratic Party primaries in 2014 with Ipalibo Banigo as his running mate for deputy governor.

His eight-year tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023 focused on infrastructure development and security. He became known for his public statements and media presence throughout his administration.

In March 2022, Wike declared his intention to run for Nigeria's presidency under the PDP banner. Though he emerged as first runner-up with 237 votes at the party primaries, he lost to Atiku Abubakar, who secured 371 votes.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in 2023, bringing his governance experience to the national stage. The lawyer-politician continues to shape policy in one of Nigeria's most critical administrative centers.
