Nollywood was still finding its footing when The New York Times decided to name it.

The Nigerian film industry didn't have a proper name until the early 2000s. A New York Times article changed everything by coining the term "Nollywood"—a portmanteau of Nigeria and Hollywood. Suddenly, what had been scattered local productions had an identity on the world stage.

The origin story is more complicated than the catchy name suggests. There is no clear or agreed-upon definition for the term. This lack of clarity has made Nollywood a subject of several controversies over the years.

What started as a simple journalistic label became something far more complex. The term originally referred to the Nigerian film industry in its entirety. But as the industry evolved, so did the meanings and contexts attached to the word.

The controversies surrounding its definition reveal deeper questions about identity and scope. Different stakeholders have argued about what Nollywood actually encompasses. Some saw it as a brand for all Nigerian cinema. Others viewed it as referring only to specific production styles or regions.

Despite the definitional debates, the industry continued to grow. Filmmakers kept producing. Audiences kept watching. The question of what to call it became less important than what it was actually doing.

Today, Nollywood remains imprecisely defined but undeniably influential. It has become a global reference point for African cinema. Yet the original term still carries the uncertainty of its birth.

The early 2000s naming was both a blessing and a burden. It gave Nigeria's film industry international visibility almost instantly. But it also left ambiguity that has never been fully resolved, making Nollywood as much a subject of debate as it is a thriving creative force.
