About Nnamdi Azikiwe

Nnamdi Azikiwe was the first president of Nigeria. He served from 1963 to 1966 during the First Nigerian Republic, after three years as governor-general from 1960 to 1963. Before he wore the presidential sash, he was already known as Zik of Africa—a revolutionary who shaped the nation's independence.

He was born on November 16, 1904, in Zungeru, in present-day Niger State. His parents were Igbo from Onitsha, Anambra State. Growing up in the North, young Nnamdi learned Hausa, the main indigenous language of the region. This early exposure to multiple cultures would define his life.

His aunt and grandmother brought him to Onitsha, where he learned Igbo. Lagos exposed him to Yoruba. By the time he reached college, he spoke all three major Nigerian languages fluently. This rare ability helped him understand the country's diverse peoples at a deeper level.

Azikiwe was restless. He left Nigeria for the United States in search of education and opportunity. He attended Storer College, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania and Howard University. He was also an athlete and even contacted colonial authorities requesting to represent Nigeria at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.

In 1934, he returned to Africa and started working as a journalist in the Gold Coast, present-day Ghana. During British West Africa, he became a political activist and journalist rolled into one. His writings challenged colonial rule. His voice grew louder with each article.

Azikiwe is widely regarded as the father of Nigerian nationalism. He was one of the major driving forces behind the country's independence in 1960. His journey from Zungeru to the presidency showed what one man's conviction could achieve. When Nigeria finally became a sovereign nation, Zik of Africa had already written much of its story.
