# Nkechi Ude: The Visionary Behind Anambra's Library Renaissance
Most Nigerians know the Anambra State Library Board for one thing: winning Best Public Library in Nigeria for three consecutive years.
Nkechi Ude built the infrastructure that made this possible. As a driving force behind the ANSLB, she envisioned libraries not as quiet storage spaces but as community anchors. Her work transformed how Anambra State approached public access to information.
The headquarters sits along the Awka-Enugu express road by Aroma junction in Awka, the capital of Anambra State. Inside, the Professor Kenneth Dike State Central e-Library stands as the flagship facility. Ude understood that a central library needed to be more than symbolic—it needed to function.
Under her leadership, the board expanded to manage eleven public libraries across the state. Three Divisional libraries and seven Branch/Community libraries now serve towns and villages that previously had no access to organized collections. Each location carries the same mission she established from the beginning.
The consecutive wins for Best Public Library in Nigeria did not arrive by accident. Ude implemented systems for cataloguing, staffing, and community engagement that other state library boards studied. Her approach merged traditional librarianship with modern expectations for service.
In 2023, the ANSLB received yet another honor: the Ever Green Public Library in Nigeria award. This recognition reflected not just one year's work but a sustained commitment to excellence. Ude had proven that public libraries could thrive in Nigeria when given proper vision and structure.
Her legacy extends beyond Awka's walls. Other state governments began asking how the Anambra State Library Board achieved what it did. Ude's answer was always the same: treat libraries as essential infrastructure, not afterthoughts.
Today, the Professor Kenneth Dike State Central e-Library continues to operate at the heart of Anambra's library network. Thousands of Nigerians visit these spaces yearly because Nkechi Ude decided they deserved to.
