About Muhammadu Buhari
Discipline was the weapon Muhammadu Buhari wielded when he took control of Nigeria on December 31, 1983. The general had just orchestrated a military coup that toppled the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari. Economic crisis and widespread corruption had crippled the nation, and Buhari promised to fix it through sheer force of will.
He was born on December 17, 1942, into a world that would eventually demand everything from him. Before seizing power, Buhari had already earned a reputation as a tough military officer. He fought in the Nigerian Civil War and later commanded troops in the Chadian–Nigerian War under Shagari's presidency.
As military head of state, Buhari implemented what became known as the War Against Indiscipline (WAI). His governance style was rigid, austere, and unapologetic. He cracked down on corruption with an iron fist and demanded sacrifice from every level of society.
His approach created a system later called Buharism—a political philosophy built on order and accountability. Yet his harsh methods alienated many within the military itself. Economic hardship continued despite his efforts to stabilize the nation.
After just 20 months in power, Buhari fell to a palace coup on August 27, 1985. General Ibrahim Babangida seized control, removing him from office. The experiment in military discipline had ended, but Buhari's political career was far from over.
He returned to politics decades later, running for president multiple times. The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) backed him in 2003 and 2007. These campaigns failed, but they kept his name alive in Nigeria's political consciousness.
Finally, in 2015, Buhari won the presidential election as the candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He served as civilian president from 2015 to 2023, returning to power through democratic means. The former military dictator had transformed himself into an elected leader.
Muhammadu Buhari died on July 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy shaped by contradiction. He was both the authoritarian who ruled through fear and the democrat who accepted electoral defeat. Nigeria would spend decades debating which version of Buhari defined his true impact.
