About Mo'Cheddah
If You Want Me came out in 2009 and announced a new voice in Nigerian hip-hop. Modupe-Oreoluwa Oyeyemi Ola was born on October 16, 1990. Under her stage name Mo'Cheddah, she would soon become one of the country's most distinctive rappers.
She released her debut studio album, Franchise Celebrity, in 2010. The album dropped while she was signed to Knighthouse Entertainment. It introduced her sharp lyricism and commanding presence to a growing audience across Nigeria.
Mo'Cheddah's style blended rap with singing, a rare combination at the time. Her wordplay was sharp. Her delivery cut through the noise of a crowded music scene.
By 2012, she had outgrown her initial partnership. She parted ways with Knighthouse Entertainment in February of that year. The split marked a turning point in her career.
She established Cheddah Music, her own independent label. This move gave her complete creative control. It also positioned her as an entrepreneur in an industry dominated by men.
Mo'Cheddah continued to record and perform across Nigeria and beyond. Her music remained rooted in hip-hop but never stayed confined to a single sound. She proved herself a versatile artist willing to experiment.
Her journey from Knighthouse to independence reflected a larger shift in the Nigerian music industry. Independent labels were becoming viable alternatives to traditional deals. Mo'Cheddah led by example, building her own platform.
Today, Mo'Cheddah stands as a reminder that rap in Nigeria belonged to women too. Her albums and singles remain markers of a critical period in the country's music history. If You Want Me and Franchise Celebrity introduced audiences to an artist unafraid to claim her space.
