About M.I Abaga
Crowd Mentality changed everything for M.I Abaga. The 2006 single announced a new force in Nigerian rap, one that would reshape the entire genre.
Jude Lemfani Abaga was born on October 4, 1981. He would become known to millions simply as M.I, the rapper who brought discipline and lyricism back to hip hop in Africa.
His debut album Talk About It dropped in 2008. It confirmed what Crowd Mentality had promised—a serious artist with serious bars. M.I was not here to follow trends. He was here to set them.
MI 2: The Movie arrived in 2010 and solidified his position at the top of Nigerian rap. Awards followed. He won Best Hip-Hop Act at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2009 and earned a BET Awards nomination in 2010. The recognition was deserved. M.I had done more than make songs. He revolutionized how hip hop worked on the continent, including how rap cyphers in Africa are made.
As an entrepreneur, he took the next step. M.I became CEO of Chocolate City from 2015 to 2019, running one of Nigeria's biggest music labels. But in 2020, he left to establish his own imprint, Incredible Music. The move reflected his ambition—not just to rap, but to build.
The Chairman landed in 2014 and proved he had not slowed down. Then came The Guy in 2022, another full statement from an artist still hungry. According to Okay Africa, M.I stands among the greatest African rappers of all time. That ranking did not come from hype. It came from years of consistent excellence.
M.I Abaga remains a defining figure in African hip hop. His influence stretches from Lagos to Johannesburg, from Accra to the diaspora. He showed that African rap could be just as skilled, just as ambitious, just as important as anything coming from the West.
