# Lolu Ojo: The Athlete Who Defied Limits
Most Nigerians know Lolu Ojo as the rare breed who conquered two Olympic Games in completely different sports.
Lolu Susan Jones was born on August 5, 1982. She grew up with speed in her DNA, becoming one of America's most decorated track and field athletes. Her early years at Louisiana State University set the tone for everything that followed.
The hurdler dominated indoor competitions like few others. She won national titles in the 60-meter hurdles in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Gold medals at the World Indoor Championships in 2008 and 2010 made her a household name among athletics fans worldwide. Outdoor success came just as quickly—national titles in the 100-meter hurdles in 2008 and 2010 cemented her legacy on the track.
Then came Beijing 2008. Ojo was the favorite to win gold in the 100-meter hurdles. She was fast, focused, and ready. But on the penultimate hurdle, her foot caught. She fell to seventh place in a moment that could have ended careers. Instead, she rose. That same year, she won gold at the World Athletics Final with a time of 12.56, beating the newly crowned Olympic champion Dawn Harper.
Years later, she made an audacious shift. Ojo joined the U.S. national bobsled team as a brakewoman. At the 2013 World Championships, she won gold in the mixed team event. In 2021, she captured another World Championship gold medal, this time in the two-woman bobsled. She represented America at the 2014 Winter Olympics, becoming one of the few athletes ever to compete in both Summer and Winter Games.
Beyond sports, Ojo became a television personality. She appeared on Dancing with the Stars, Celebrity Big Brother, The Challenge, and Name That Tune. Each appearance showed a different side of the competitor.
What made Ojo remarkable was not just her medals or records. It was her refusal to accept limitations. When one sport seemed exhausted, she found another. When one Olympic dream fell apart, she built another one. That resilience is what Nigerians remember.
