"Truth Hurts" spent 19 weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100. It became the longest-leading solo song by a female rapper. Yet Lizzo had released it years earlier, in 2017, as a quiet sleeper hit that nobody expected would explode.

Melissa Viviane Jefferson was born on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan. Her family moved to Houston, Texas when she was ten years old. Music was already calling, even then.

After college, Lizzo relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota to chase her recording career in hip-hop. She released two studio albums independently: Lizzobangers in 2013 and Big Grrrl Small World in 2015. The major labels were not yet listening.

Everything shifted when she signed with Nice Life Recording Company and Atlantic Records. Her first major-label EP, Coconut Oil, dropped in 2016. But mainstream success still felt distant.

Then came Cuz I Love You in 2019, her third studio album. The album peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200 and spawned massive singles like "Juice" and "Tempo". The deluxe version reintroduced "Truth Hurts" to the world, and this time, it went viral.

"Good as Hell," another single from 2016, also climbed the charts two years later. It reached the top ten of both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. Lizzo was suddenly everywhere.

At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, she received eight nominations—more than any other artist that year. She won Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Pop Solo Performance for "Truth Hurts," and Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Jerome". The accolades included nominations across each of the "Big Four" Grammy categories.

Lizzo had crossed from underground Minneapolis rapper to global pop force in just a few years. Her net worth remains undisclosed, but her impact on music is unmeasurable. The girl from Detroit had finally arrived.
