Juju Music was still climbing the international charts when King Sunny Adé became the first Nigerian artist to receive a Grammy nomination.

Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye was born on September 22, 1946. Professionally known as King Sunny Adé, he would become one of the most influential musicians of all time. His mastery of the jùjú genre transformed Nigerian music into a global phenomenon.

Sunny Adé formed his backing band in 1967. The group eventually became known as his African Beats. He spent the 1970s building a national reputation across Nigeria, perfecting the layered, guitar-driven sound that would define his career.

In 1982, he signed to Island Records and released Juju Music. The album introduced the world to his innovative approach to traditional Yoruba music. International audiences discovered what Nigerian fans had long known—that Sunny Adé was a master of his craft.

Synchro System followed in 1983 and earned him his first Grammy nomination. This achievement opened doors across Europe and North America. He had become the first Nigerian artist to reach such heights on the global stage.

Beyond recording, Sunny Adé built an independent label and shaped the industry's infrastructure. He served as board chairman of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria before the organization was licensed. The society later appointed him honorary president in recognition of his leadership.

His 1998 album Odu brought another Grammy nomination. Two decades into his international career, he remained at the forefront of innovation. Sunny Adé continued to prove that jùjú music could captivate audiences worldwide.
