Finance shaped Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta's career long before he entered government. Born on November 7, 1959, the Ghanaian investment banker built his reputation in the private sector first. He co-founded Databank Group, a financial services company that became one of Ghana's most respected firms.

Ofori-Atta served as executive chairman of Databank Group until 2012. The company grew under his leadership to become a major player in Ghana's financial landscape. His work in investment banking earned him recognition across West Africa.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, his paternal cousin, nominated him for finance minister on January 10, 2017. Ofori-Atta assumed office on January 27, 2017. His appointment marked a shift toward bringing private sector expertise into Ghana's economic management.

As finance minister from 2017 to 2024, Ofori-Atta oversaw Ghana's economic planning and financial policy. He served through a challenging period marked by currency pressures and debt concerns. His tenure saw debates about fiscal discipline and international negotiations.

On February 14, 2024, President Akufo-Addo relieved him of his position. The exit came after years of public scrutiny over Ghana's economic direction. His departure marked the end of seven years in the cabinet.

In early February 2025, the special prosecutor added Ofori-Atta to a wanted list over financial misconduct charges. Days later, on February 18, he pledged to return voluntarily and his name was removed. An Interpol red notice followed in June 2025, but the organization suspended it after reviewing compliance concerns.

Ofori-Atta was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at the time. Interpol's suspension reflected questions about the special prosecutor's procedural compliance. The case remained unresolved as his health battle continued.
