About Kelechi Iheanacho
Leicester City's 2020–21 FA Cup triumph was built on Kelechi Iheanacho's clinical finishing. The Nigerian forward scored four goals across the tournament, joint-high among all strikers, as the Foxes claimed their first FA Cup title in the club's history.
Kelechi Promise Iheanacho was born on October 3, 1996. He grew up in Nigeria before his talent caught the attention of English clubs while still a teenager.
His senior career began at Manchester City during the 2015–16 season. He won the Football League Cup in his debut campaign, announcing himself as a player of genuine potential.
In 2017, Leicester City paid a reported £25 million to sign him. It was the largest transfer fee ever paid for a Nigerian player at the time and the second-largest for an African player after Mohamed Salah. The investment would prove worthwhile.
The 2021 FA Community Shield cemented his importance to Leicester's trophy-winning mentality. Iheanacho scored the match's sole goal from the penalty spot as the club lifted the shield against Manchester City.
On the international stage, Iheanacho burst onto the scene at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He was named the tournament's best player and finished as the second-highest goalscorer as Nigeria won their record fourth title. He was voted the Most Promising African Talent in 2013, a recognition of his exceptional youth performances.
His senior debut for Nigeria came in 2015, shortly after competing at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He would go on to represent his country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2021 and 2023. Nigeria finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Iheanacho in their squad.
In 2016, he was named as a substitute for the CAF Team of the Year. By then, he had already earned a second Most Promising African Talent award. His trajectory from Manchester City prospect to Leicester City's FA Cup hero to international striker has defined his career.
