Kampala's John Sentamu spoke truth to power when Uganda trembled under Idi Amin's brutal rule. While many kept silent, the young lawyer used his voice and paid the price—a prison cell became his classroom in resistance.

Born on June 10, 1949, near Uganda's capital, Sentamu chose law at Makerere University. He became an advocate of the Supreme Court of Uganda, arguing cases in a nation gripped by fear. His refusal to bow to tyranny cost him his freedom, briefly, before he fled in 1974 to the United Kingdom.

In Britain, Sentamu discovered theology where he had found law. He enrolled at Selwyn College, Cambridge in 1976 and never looked back. The man who had fought Amin's darkness now sought spiritual answers. His doctorate came in 1984, a scholar reborn.

Ordination followed at Ridley Hall, Cambridge in 1979. Sentamu moved through the Church of England's ranks steadily. In 1996, he became area bishop of Stepney. By 2002, he led Birmingham as its bishop.

Then came York. In 2005, Sentamu was appointed Archbishop of York and Primate of England—the second-highest position in the Anglican Church. For fifteen years, he carried this weight. His voice on Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe rang loud. He condemned the dictator when others whispered.

Sentamu retired in 2020 after fifteen years at York's helm. His departure, however, carried shadows. Investigations followed into how he had handled child sexual abuse allegations. The Church found he had mismanaged safeguarding cases. A life of fighting injustice ended with questions about his own judgment.

In December 2020, he was created a crossbench life peer—Baron Sentamu. The honor arrived amid controversy. History would remember him as both the fearless lawyer who defied Amin and the archbishop whose safeguarding failures disappointed the vulnerable.
