The ball was still rolling when John Obi Mikel lifted the Champions League trophy in 2012. It was Chelsea's first European Cup in their history, and the Nigerian midfielder had been the heartbeat of that team for six years.

John Michael Nchekwube Obinna was born on April 22, 1987. He grew up in Nigeria and started his football journey with Plateau United before moving to Norwegian club Lyn at just 17 years old in 2004.

In 2006, Mikel made a controversial switch to English club Chelsea. Manchester United had claimed they had already signed him, but the midfielder ended up at Stamford Bridge instead. The move would define his career.

He stayed at Chelsea for 11 years. During that time, he won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and that historic Champions League trophy in 2012. Mikel became one of the most reliable defensive midfielders in European football.

For Nigeria, Mikel was equally important. Between 2005 and 2019, he earned 91 caps and scored six goals. He played in five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, winning the crown in 2013. He also featured in two World Cups and won bronze at the 2016 Olympics.

After leaving Chelsea, his career took him across the globe. He had stints at Tianjin TEDA, Middlesbrough, Trabzonspor, Stoke City, and Kuwait SC. None of these moves matched the glory of his London years.

Mikel retired from professional football in 2019, ending a 14-year international career. By then, he had cemented his place as one of Nigeria's greatest midfielders. His work rate, positioning, and leadership had influenced a generation of African players.

From Plateau United to Stamford Bridge, from local pitches to European stages, Mikel's journey was one of ambition and consistency. He left Nigeria as a teenager and returned as a champion.
