Security was Janet Napolitano's beat long before most Nigerians knew her name.

Janet Ann Napolitano was born on November 29, 1957, in America. She studied law and entered public service with quiet determination. By the 1990s, she had become the United States attorney for the District of Arizona.

Arizona's political establishment took notice. In 1999, she was elected as the state's 23rd attorney general. She served in that role until 2003, building a reputation for tough governance and legal precision.

Her elevation came swiftly. Napolitano became the 21st governor of Arizona in 2003. For six years, she managed one of America's largest states during turbulent times. The National Governors Association made her chairwoman for the 2006-2007 cycle—a recognition of her peers' respect.

President Obama called in 2009. Napolitano became United States secretary of homeland security, the top security officer in America. She served until 2013, navigating national security threats with the same methodical approach that defined her governorship. Forbes ranked her as the world's ninth most powerful woman in 2012 and eighth in 2013.

But Napolitano's ascent did not stop there. In 2013, she took over as the 20th president of the University of California. Managing a massive university system proved different from political office. She led the institution until 2020, overseeing academic strategy and institutional growth.

Since 2015, she has taught at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Her classroom became her studio. In 2018, the American Philosophical Society elected her to their ranks—an honour reserved for deep thinkers and public servants.
