About Ifeoma Uchegbu
When Ifeoma Uchegbu became President of Wolfson College, Cambridge in October 2024, Nigeria gained a global ambassador in one of the world's most prestigious universities.
Born on August 16, 1960, Ijeoma Florence Uchegbu built her career at the intersection of science and social responsibility. She rose through the ranks as a professor of pharmacy, earning recognition for her groundbreaking work in pharmaceutical nanoscience. Her research focused on drug delivery solutions for poorly water-soluble drugs, nucleic acids and peptides—work that has been highly cited across the scientific world.
Her influence extended beyond the laboratory. As Pro-Vice Provost for Africa and the Middle East at University College London, she shaped institutional policy and fostered research partnerships across two continents. This role positioned her as a bridge between African scientific talent and global academic networks.
Uchegbu co-founded Nanomerics, a pharmaceutical nanotechnology company that translated her research into real-world applications. The company specializes in solving one of medicine's persistent challenges: delivering drugs that don't dissolve easily in water. Her work here demonstrated that rigorous science could also be commercially viable.
Recognition came from multiple directions. She was appointed as a Governor of the Wellcome, the major biomedical research charity, giving her a seat at tables where global health priorities are set. Her contributions earned her the title of Dame, reflecting decades of distinguished service to science and society.
Beyond her scientific output, Uchegbu became known for her work in science public engagement. She championed equality and diversity in STEM fields, understanding that innovation requires talent from every corner of society. These efforts addressed a critical gap in a field where representation remains uneven.
In December 2023, Cambridge announced she would lead Wolfson College. The appointment marked recognition of her standing as a scholar, administrator and advocate. Now, as President, she brings Nigerian excellence to one of Britain's oldest universities. Her journey from Nigeria to the highest echelons of global academia exemplifies what is possible when talent meets determination.
