About Ibrahim Zakzaky

Unrest still gripped Nigeria's streets when Ibrahim Zakzaky walked into Ahmadu Bello University to study. The man who would become the nation's most prominent Shia leader was born on May 5, 1953. His journey from student activist to religious figurehead began in the late 1970s at the Kaduna campus.

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 changed everything for Zakzaky. When Iran's monarchy fell and gave way to an Islamic republic under Ruhollah Khomeini, the young scholar took notice. He began propagating Shia Islam across Nigeria with renewed purpose and conviction.

Zakzaky founded Nigeria's Islamic Movement in the late 1970s. What started as student lectures evolved into a nationwide organization with thousands of followers. He believed that establishing a religious republic similar to Iran's model was feasible in Nigeria.

The religious leader has been detained multiple times throughout his life. Civil disobedience charges and accusations of recalcitrance followed him for decades. Prison cells could not silence his message or slow his influence across the country.

In May 2023, Zakzaky delivered a lecture marking Sheikh Uthman Bn Fodio Week. He stated his intention to continue the Jihad of Uthman Bn Fodio across West Africa. His vision extends beyond Nigeria's borders to make Islam the ruling religion throughout the region.

Zakzaky has become an outspoken critic of corruption in Nigerian governance. He argues that only Islam offers real solutions to the nation's complex socio-political problems. Development has stagnated, he contends, because the country has rejected Islamic principles.

On May 20, 2023, in Sokoto, one of his proponents declared that Zakzaky's dream represents Africa's only hope. The movement he leads continues to draw followers seeking religious and political transformation. His decades-long struggle persists as he pushes for systemic Islamic reform across the continent.
