About Hicham El Guerrouj

The afternoon in Athens belonged to Hicham El Guerrouj. On September 10, 2004, the Moroccan middle-distance runner crossed the finish line to claim gold in the 1500 metres at the Olympic Games. It was a moment that cemented his legacy as the greatest runner of his era.

Hicham El Guerrouj was born on September 14, 1974, in Berkane, Morocco. From his earliest days on the track, he showed a hunger that separated him from his competitors. By the mid-1990s, his name had become synonymous with dominance in middle-distance running.

The records came fast and relentless. El Guerrouj holds the world record in the 1500 metres and the mile. He was also the former world record holder in the 2000 metres. As of October 2024, he still owns six of the 10 fastest times ever recorded in the 1500 m and seven of the 15 fastest in the mile. These numbers speak louder than any headline ever could.

Between 1997 and 2003, El Guerrouj won four gold medals at the World Athletics Championships in the 1500 metres. His consistency was almost unnatural. He claimed the World Athlete of the Year award three times during his career. Coaches and rivals alike struggled to explain how one man could be so far ahead.

What made El Guerrouj truly unique was his versatility. He remains the only man in history to win gold in both the 1500 m and 5000 metres at the same Olympic Games since Paavo Nurmi accomplished the feat decades earlier. He and Jakob Ingebrigtsen are the sole men ever to break 3:27 in the 1500 m and 3:44 in the mile. El Guerrouj did it five times in the 1500 m alone.

When El Guerrouj retired, the track mourned. In November 2014, the International Association of Athletics Federations inducted him into their Hall of Fame. The recognition arrived late, but it was deserved. His times still stand as monuments to what the human body can achieve.
