About Herbert Wigwe

Access Bank was already formidable when Herbert Wigwe took the helm in 2014. But under his leadership, Nigeria's banking sector would never quite look the same.

Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe was born on August 15, 1966. He entered the financial world not through family connections but through merit, starting his career at Coopers & Lybrand. The Big Four accounting firm taught him discipline and numbers before anything else.

His move to Guaranty Trust Bank sharpened his banking instincts. Wigwe learned the mechanics of Nigerian finance during GTB's golden years. He watched how institutions build trust. He watched how they scale.

Access Bank recruited him in 2002 as deputy managing director. For over a decade, Wigwe worked alongside Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, the bank's founder. Their partnership was built on complementary strengths. In January 2014, Wigwe ascended to group managing director and CEO.

The timing was critical. Nigeria's banking sector faced mounting pressures from regulatory changes and economic headwinds. Wigwe steered Access Bank through consolidation waves and digital transformation. He expanded the bank's continental footprint. Under his watch, Access Bank grew into one of Nigeria's top five banking institutions.

Wigwe was known for strategic thinking and operational excellence. He believed in meritocracy and youth development. Colleagues remembered him as focused, detail-oriented, and approachable.

On February 9, 2024, a helicopter carrying Wigwe crashed in the United States. He was traveling to Las Vegas to attend Super Bowl LVIII, which was scheduled for two days later. He was 57 years old. The banking world lost a towering figure. Nigeria lost a builder.

Wigwe left behind a legacy at Access Bank. He also left behind a template for Nigerian banking leadership—one rooted in hard work, strategic vision, and institutional development. His death shook the industry. It reminded Nigeria that its finest leaders are not invincible.
