Godwin Obaseki stepped into the Governor's Office of Edo State on November 12, 2016, with a mandate to transform one of Nigeria's most vibrant regions. He had won the gubernatorial election under the All Progressives Congress platform, defeating Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party. For eight years, until 2024, he would shape the political and economic direction of the state.

Before the statehouse, Obaseki was already embedded in Edo's power corridors. In March 2009, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole inaugurated the Edo State Economic and Strategy Team, and Obaseki was appointed its chairman. The role positioned him as a key economic strategist in the state's development plans.

His credentials ran deep. Obaseki holds postgraduate degrees in finance and international business. He earned his status as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stock Brokers, Nigeria—a distinction that marked him as a serious finance professional.

Born on July 1, 1957, Obaseki had spent decades building expertise in the private sector before public service called. He served as a board member of several private companies, including Afrinvest, where he accumulated experience in investment and corporate governance.

His tenure as governor drew recognition from within the education sector. In October 2019, the Nigerian Union of Teachers presented him with an award for best performing governor of the year. The honor reflected his administration's focus on educational development and teacher welfare in Edo State.

Obaseki's eight-year governorship represented a significant period in Edo State's recent history. He navigated the state through economic challenges while attempting to position it as a competitive hub within Nigeria's federation. His background in finance and strategic planning shaped his approach to governance.
