About George Weah
George Weah was the 25th president of Liberia, serving from 2018 to 2024. Before ascending to the highest office in his West African nation, he represented Montserrado County as a senator. His political career would prove historic, but it was his football legacy that made his presidency extraordinary.
Weah was born on October 1, 1966, in Liberia. He became a striker of exceptional talent, playing professionally for 18 years before retiring in 2003. His rise from his native country to the world's greatest football stages remains one of sport's most remarkable journeys.
Arsène Wenger discovered Weah's potential and signed him for AS Monaco in 1988, bringing him to Europe at age 22. This move changed everything. He would spend the next 14 years playing for elite clubs across France, Italy, and England.
At Paris Saint-Germain, Weah reached his peak. He joined the club in 1992 and helped them win Division 1 in 1994. The following season, he became the top scorer of the 1994–95 UEFA Champions League, cementing his status among Europe's elite strikers.
In 1995, Weah won both the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year—awards no other African has won since. He also claimed the African Footballer of the Year twice. That same year, he signed for AC Milan, where he spent four successful seasons and won Serie A twice.
His later career took him to England's Premier League. He played for Chelsea, winning the FA Cup, and Manchester City before returning to France to play for Marseille in 2001. He finished his career with Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates.
Weah earned 75 caps for Liberia's national team, scoring 18 goals. FourFourTwo magazine later named him one of the best players never to win the UEFA Champions League. His influence extended beyond the pitch, eventually leading him to become the first African former professional footballer to serve as a head of state.
