Fisayo Soyombo was born on October 27. Before he became Nigeria's most fearless investigative journalist, he worked as an editor at The Cable, one of the country's leading online news platforms. But it was what he did next that made him unforgettable.

In 2018, Soyombo spent five days locked in a police cell as a suspect. He then spent eight more days as an inmate in Ikoyi Prison. He wasn't accused of a crime. He was working undercover—documenting the rot in Nigeria's criminal justice system from the inside. What he saw and reported shocked the nation. The authorities were so rattled by his findings that they contemplated arresting him for real.

The investigation became a landmark exposé. It revealed extortion, brutality and systematic corruption within police stations and prisons. Soyombo's undercover reporting set a new standard for investigative journalism in Nigeria. It proved that some stories demand more than phone calls and interviews.

Then came the checkpoint journey. In 2019, Soyombo drove what amounted to a stolen vehicle from Abuja to Lagos. The journey covered over 1,600 kilometers. He passed through 86 checkpoints. The entire drive took 28 hours and 17 minutes of cumulative driving time. The mission: to document the extortion racket at Nigeria's roadblocks. What emerged was damning evidence of how security operatives were systematically looting travelers.

In 2019, Soyombo founded the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). The organization became a hub for in-depth reporting on corruption, crime and human rights abuses across Nigeria. FIJ has trained dozens of journalists and published investigations that sparked national conversations and, in some cases, government action.

Fisayo Soyombo operates differently from most journalists. He doesn't just report the news. He infiltrates it. He risks his liberty to hold power accountable. That willingness to go undercover—literally into cells and prisons—is what sets him apart. In a country where many journalists play it safe, Soyombo chose danger. And Nigeria's pursuit of accountability became stronger because he did.
