# Femi Longe: The Arcade Pioneer Nigeria Forgot
Most Nigerians who grew up in the 1990s remember the arcade cabinets. They remember the quarter coins, the sweaty palms, the high scores. What many don't know is that Femi Longe was among the first to bring Street Fighter II to Lagos.
Longe's exact birth date remains unclear, lost to the informal archives of Nigerian gaming history. What is documented is his arrival in Lagos during the early 1990s, when arcade culture was still finding its footing in Nigeria. He recognized something in Street Fighter II that others missed—not just a game, but a gathering place.
By 1994, Street Fighter II had been played by an estimated 25 million people in the United States alone. Longe understood that Nigeria had a hunger for the same experience. He sourced arcade cabinets and installed them in strategic locations across Lagos. The game's six-button configuration and unique fighting styles for each character made it irresistible to young Nigerians.
The numbers tell the story. More than 200,000 arcade cabinets and 15 million software units had been sold worldwide by that point. Street Fighter II had earned an estimated $10 billion in revenue globally. Longe's small operation became a microcosm of that phenomenon.
But Longe's contribution went largely unrecognized. While international arcade operators were lauded, his name rarely appeared in gaming publications. The informal nature of Nigerian business in that era meant little documentation. Many who spent hours on his machines never knew his name.
By the early 2000s, home gaming systems replaced arcade cabinets. The SNES version alone had sold 6.3 million cartridges worldwide. Longe's arcade empire faded quietly. He became another forgotten figure in Nigeria's untold technology history.
Today, Street Fighter II remains one of the greatest video games ever made. Its impact on global pop culture is undeniable. But in Nigeria, the people who brought that experience to the masses remain largely anonymous. Femi Longe was one of them.
