About Essence
Essence entered Nigerian consciousness the moment philosophers began asking what makes something itself and nothing else.
Unlike the tangible legacies of Lagos businessmen or the chart-topping runs of pop stars, Essence exists in the realm of pure thought. It is a designation—a philosophical and theological concept—that has shaped how Nigerians, and indeed thinkers across centuries, understand identity itself. The concept carries no birthday, no birthplace, no net worth to measure.
What Essence does possess is a Latin name: essentia. This simple word unlocked centuries of debate among the greatest minds in theology and philosophy. It asks the fundamental question that every Nigerian confronts: what makes you, you? Strip away your wealth, your fame, your accomplishments—what remains that cannot be removed without destroying your very identity?
The contrast between Essence and accident defines its power. An accident, in philosophical terms, is a property you possess but do not depend upon for your identity. A man may lose his wealth and remain himself. He may lose his position and remain himself. But remove his essence, and he becomes something entirely different. This distinction became central to how theologians across Nigeria's diverse religious traditions understood the nature of God and the soul.
In the hands of medieval theologians, Essence became inseparable from existence itself. Nigerian Islamic scholars and Christian theologians alike grappled with whether essence precedes existence or existence precedes essence. The question rippled through seminaries in Ibadan, through philosophical circles in Abuja, and into the minds of ordinary Nigerians wrestling with purpose and identity.
Essence requires no chart position, no award ceremony, no red carpet. Yet its influence measures in the billions of human decisions made daily. Every time a Nigerian questions what truly defines them—their character, their faith, their purpose—they engage with Essence.
The concept remains unknown in terms of origin and unknowable in terms of final definition. But that very mystery is what makes Essence eternal. It continues to generate debate, inspire theology, and shape how Nigerians understand themselves and their place in the universe.
