About Ese Brume

The bronze medal gleamed under the Tokyo sun when Ese Brume leaped 6.97 metres at the 2020 Summer Olympics. It was her second podium finish at the world's biggest sporting stage, cementing her place among Nigeria's greatest athletes.

Ese Brume was born on January 20, 1996. From her early years, she showed a special gift for the long jump. By 2013, still a junior athlete, she claimed gold at the African Junior Athletics Championships.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow became her breakthrough moment. Brume won the gold medal and set a Commonwealth Games record that still stands. That same year, she captured the African Senior Athletics Championships title and competed at the World Junior Championships.

Her dominance in African competitions became unmistakable. Between 2014 and 2018, Brume won three consecutive long jump titles at the African Championships—a feat no athlete before her had achieved. She became the first African woman ever to win two long jump medals at the World Athletics Championships.

The 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, delivered another bronze medal with a jump of 6.91 metres. One year later, Tokyo brought her Olympic bronze with 6.97 metres. These back-to-back world medals proved she could compete at the highest level.

In 2022, Brume made history again. She became the first African woman to jump four legal marks over 7.00 metres. Her personal best of 7.17 metres ranks among the world's elite. She currently holds the Commonwealth Games record, African junior record, and African senior record in the long jump.

Today, Brume is the Commonwealth champion and a three-time African senior champion. She has earned five African junior titles throughout her career. The MON honour added to her name reflects Nigeria's recognition of her contributions to sport.

From junior competitions to Olympic podiums, Ese Brume's journey redefined what African women could achieve in the long jump. Her records stand as testaments to discipline, dedication, and an athlete who refused to settle for anything less than excellence.
