# Ernest Shonekan: The Lawyer Who Led a Nation

For 83 days in 1993, Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan held the highest office in Nigeria. On August 26, 1993, he was installed as the interim head of state, taking the reins of a nation in transition. His tenure lasted until November 17, 1993, a brief but pivotal moment in Nigeria's democratic history.

Before politics called, Shonekan had already built an empire in the business world. He rose to become chairman and chief executive of the United African Company of Nigeria. This vast conglomerate was the largest African-controlled company in Sub-Saharan Africa at the time, a testament to his acumen and vision.

Born on May 9, 1936, Shonekan came from a background that valued education and public service. His training in law gave him the intellectual foundation to navigate complex affairs of state. The legal mind would later prove essential during his time as interim leader.
