About Earl "EJay" Day Jr.
"I'll Be" was still echoing across American radio when Earl "EJay" Day Jr. stepped into the American Idol studio for the first season.
Earl Day Jr. was born on September 13, 1981, in the United States. Before his rise to national fame, he had already made waves in the music industry. He helped write "Pure Love" for Raven-Symoné's album Undeniable and placed in the top 20 on Popstars: USA.
American Idol's first season changed everything for Day. He was not initially chosen to advance into the voting rounds. But when another contestant was disqualified for lying about his age, Day was brought back as a replacement. He was voted through the semi-finals into the top ten.
History came calling in an unexpected way. Day became the first finalist in American Idol history to be eliminated from the competition. The moment was painful but it did not end his career. Instead, it launched him onto a national stage.
In 2002, Day participated in the American Idols LIVE! tour. That same year, American Idol: Greatest Moments was released. This compilation album featured all the first season finalists and reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. Day's rendition of Edwin McCain's "I'll Be" was included on the project.
Throughout 2002 and 2003, Day made several appearances at charity events. He toured again in 2003 as part of Coca-Cola's Behind the Scenes With American Idol. Various American Idol finalists performed in select shopping malls throughout the country during this promotional campaign.
In 2003, Day collaborated with fellow first season finalist AJ Gil on a single. The song, "Calling All Angels," was written for and released through Give Kids the World. Day and Gil first performed this song in Pasadena, California, supporting the charitable cause.
Though Day never released a full studio album, his impact on American Idol's legacy remains solid. His journey from replacement contestant to historic finalist showcased the unpredictable nature of competition television. EJay Day Jr. proved that sometimes the most memorable moments come from the most unexpected places.
