Calabar was still growing when Donald Duke arrived on September 30, 1961. His early years in the Cross River region would shape a political career that would eventually lead him to the highest offices of the state.

Duke rose through the ranks of Nigerian politics with steady ambition. By 1999, he had positioned himself as a formidable candidate in Cross River State.

He was elected Governor of Cross River State on May 29, 1999. For eight years, he held the office until May 29, 2007, overseeing major developments in the southeastern state.

During his tenure as governor, Duke implemented various infrastructure and developmental projects across Cross River. His administration focused on economic growth and public services in the state.

After leaving office, Duke remained active in Nigerian politics. He joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and became their presidential candidate in the 2019 Nigerian elections.

The 2019 presidential race was intensely competitive. Duke contested against other major candidates but did not secure the presidency.

In recent years, he shifted his political allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He continues to be involved in Nigerian political discourse and governance matters.
