About Darren Sammy

Two trophies lifted. Two World Twenty20 championships won under the same captain. When Darren Sammy held the trophy aloft in 2016, he became something cricket had never seen before—the only captain to win the T20 World Cup twice.

Daren Julius Garvey Sammy was born on December 20, 1983, on the island of Saint Lucia in the Caribbean. When he made his One-Day International debut against Bangladesh in 2004, he became the first person from St Lucia to ever play international cricket. Three years later, everything changed. On his Test debut against England in 2007, Sammy took 7 wickets for 66 runs—the best bowling figures for a West Indian in a debut Test match since Alf Valentine did it in 1950.

But captaincy is where Sammy truly made his mark. In 2012, he led West Indies to victory in the ICC World Twenty20, defeating Sri Lanka. It was West Indies' first major trophy in 8 years, since they had won the ICC Champions Trophy back in 2004. Four years later, in 2016, Sammy did it again. He captained West Indies to another T20 World Cup victory, this time against England. No other captain had ever won the tournament twice.

The recognition came swiftly. In 2017, Sammy was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to cricket. His trophy cabinet was full. Yet his playing career had limits. On August 5, 2016, he was dropped as T20I captain of West Indies.

After stepping away from international cricket, Sammy moved into club cricket leadership. He captained Peshawar Zalmi in Pakistan's Super League from 2017 until 2020, when he stepped down due to fitness concerns. The franchise then offered him a two-year head coaching contract instead.

Today, Sammy serves as head coach of the West Indies cricket team. From being the first Lucian to represent his nation internationally, to becoming the only captain to win the T20 World Cup twice, his journey reshaped West Indies cricket. His legacy stands on trophies and records that few in cricket history will ever match.
