About Dapo Abiodun

Adedapo Oluseun Abiodun has served as Governor of Ogun State since May 2019. The All Progressives Congress politician narrowly won his first election and secured re-election in 2023 by a similarly tight margin.

Born on May 29, 1960, in Iperu, Ogun State, Abiodun grew up in Nigeria's heartland. He would later become an accountant, building a foundation in financial expertise that shaped his career trajectory.

The 1990s marked his pivot from accounting to business. Abiodun founded First Power Limited and eventually became managing director of Heyden Petroleum, establishing himself as a significant player in Nigeria's energy sector.

Politics called during the Abacha transition in 1998. Though that democratic experiment was aborted, Abiodun remained politically active and committed to public service.

His corporate career flourished alongside his political ambitions. Before running for governor, he served as board chairman of the Corporate Affairs Commission, overseeing Nigeria's business registration authority.

The 2019 gubernatorial election brought his political trajectory to its peak. Abiodun narrowly defeated his opponents and assumed office in May 2019, taking the reins of one of Nigeria's most economically important states.

His first term as governor proved consequential. By 2023, despite a narrow victory margin, Ogun State voters returned him for a second term.

Today, Abiodun balances the demands of Nigeria's largest industrial hub. His background in accounting and petroleum management continues to inform his governance of Ogun State.
