Orange Is the New Black was still streaming when Danielle Brooks walked into rooms that would change everything.

Danielle Simpkins Brooks was born on September 17, 1989, in the United States. She trained at the prestigious Juilliard School, where she studied drama with serious discipline. That education became her foundation for everything that followed.

Her breakthrough came with Netflix's Orange Is the New Black in 2013. Brooks played Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson, a prison inmate whose character became a fan favorite across seasons. The show ran until 2019 and made her name known worldwide. During those years, she also appeared in Master of None, Netflix's comedy series that ran from 2015 to 2017.

In 2015, Brooks made her Broadway debut in The Color Purple musical revival. She played Sofia and earned a Tony Award nomination for the role. That same performance won her a Grammy Award. Broadway had found a new talent worth watching.

The role in The Color Purple would define much of her career trajectory. In 2023, she reprised Sofia for the film adaptation. This time, she earned an Academy Award nomination, a British Academy Film Award nomination, and a Golden Globe nomination. Major recognition from the industry's biggest institutions followed.

Her work expanded beyond theater and television into producing. In 2021, Brooks starred in and helped produce the Lifetime film Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia. She received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination as an executive producer on that project. The film showcased her range as both performer and creative leader.

By 2022, Brooks had become a television host as well. She hosted Netflix's reality series Instant Dream Home and earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Daytime Program Host. That same year, she starred in the superhero series Peacemaker, which has continued through 2025. She also returned to Broadway for The Piano Lesson, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination.

More recently, Brooks joined the cast of A Minecraft Movie, set for release in 2025. From prison dramas to Broadway stages to superhero action, her career has refused to stay in one lane. Danielle Brooks built herself into one of American entertainment's most versatile performers.
