About Creflo Dollar
Prosperity gospel. That is the phrase most Nigerians know Creflo Dollar by, whether they have heard him preach or simply caught wind of the controversy surrounding his teachings.
Creflo Augustus Dollar Jr. was born on January 28, 1962, in the United States. He would go on to found World Changers Church International (WCCI), a non-denominational ministry based in College Park, Georgia. The church became the headquarters of his expanding religious empire.
Dollar rose to prominence as a leading figure in the Word of Faith movement. His prosperity theology teaching spread across continents through his television program, Changing Your World. Millions tuned in to hear his message that faith and financial success were inseparable.
For decades, Dollar preached mandatory tithing as a biblical requirement. He taught that giving ten percent of earnings to the church was non-negotiable for believers. The message resonated with many across Africa and beyond who sought spiritual and material blessing.
But the 2010s brought a significant shift. Dollar began to distance himself from his earlier stance. He rebranded his ministry under what he called the "Gospel of Grace," moving away from the prosperity theology that had defined his career.
In 2022, Dollar made a shocking announcement. He formally retracted his teachings on mandatory tithing. He declared that the practice is not required for New Testament believers—a complete reversal from his previous decades of preaching.
His ministry has not been without controversy. Critics questioned his personal wealth and demanded financial transparency from World Changers Church International. Despite the scrutiny, his television program continued reaching audiences globally.
Dollar's journey from prosperity preacher to grace teacher marks one of modern Christianity's most dramatic reversals. Whether this shift represents genuine spiritual evolution or strategic repositioning remains debated among his followers and detractors alike.
