# The Fragrance That Changed Everything: The Story of Classique

Classique was still dominating department store shelves across Lagos when Jacques Cavallier walked into the laboratory to create what would become a legend.

Classique was born in 1993 as JPGaultier Eau de Parfum. Jacques Cavallier, the master perfumer behind the scent, crafted it for the fashion house Jean Paul Gaultier. The fragrance arrived at a moment when Nigerian women were beginning to embrace international luxury brands with unprecedented enthusiasm.

From 1995 to 2015, Beauté Prestige International manufactured Classique under its Shiseido subsidiary. The fragrance became a status symbol in Nigerian homes, sitting proudly on vanity tables in Ikoyi and Victoria Island. Every woman who wore it knew she was wearing something created by one of the world's greatest fragrance composers.

In 1995, Le Male emerged as Classique's masculine counterpart. This strategic move proved genius. Suddenly, couples could share the same olfactory world. The pairing made Classique even more indispensable to Nigerian luxury consumers.

Puig took over manufacturing in 2016, bringing fresh investment and wider distribution. The fragrance reached beyond the wealthy enclaves into the aspirational middle class. Classique became the scent every Nigerian woman wanted to own.

Flanker fragrances followed, each building on Classique's towering reputation. In 2021, La Belle Le Parfum launched, introducing a new generation to the legacy. The original remained untouched, perfect in its vision.
