About Busiswa
"My Name Is" was still ringing across South Africa when Busiswa stepped into the spotlight.
Busiswa Gqulu was born on November 8, 1988, in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. She grew up in a region rich with musical tradition. Her gift for words and melody would eventually carry her far beyond her hometown.
The breakthrough came through DJ Zinhle's "My Name Is". Oskido, CEO of Kalawa Jazmee, discovered her talent and brought her into the fold. That feature changed everything. Suddenly, radio stations wanted her voice. Clubs played her collaborations on repeat.
She built momentum with singles that caught fire across the country. "Ngoku" arrived with infectious energy. "Lahla" followed and deepened her reputation. Then came Bhizer's "Gobisiqolo", another collaboration that reminded South Africa why Busiswa mattered. Each song proved she could hold her own alongside established names.
On December 8, 2017, she released her debut album, Highly Flavoured. The project was preceded by the single "Bazoyenza". The album showcased her range as both a singer and poet. It revealed an artist who could navigate different sounds without losing her voice.
Recognition came swiftly. In 2014, Mail & Guardian named her among the 200 Young South Africans. The honour acknowledged her impact beyond music. She was a voice for her generation. Awards and nominations continued to follow.
Busiswa had proven what many suspected from that first feature on "My Name Is". She was not just a guest vocalist. She was a songwriter. A poet. An artist with something to say. Her journey from Mthatha to national prominence remains a testament to talent meeting opportunity at the right moment.
