About Bolaji Badejo
A towering figure emerged from Lagos in the 1970s—one tall enough to convince one of cinema's greatest directors that he was born to play an alien. Bolaji Badejo was that man. Standing at 208 centimeters, or 6 feet 10 inches, he would become Nigeria's most unlikely Hollywood export, immortalized in Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece, Alien.
Badejo was born on August 23, 1953. Before the world knew his name, he was a visual artist working in Nigeria. His canvas and brushes were his first language. But destiny had other plans for the young Nigerian.
In 1979, director Ridley Scott was searching for someone to wear the biomechanical suit of the Xenomorph in Alien. Height mattered. Presence mattered. Scott saw Badejo and saw exactly what he needed. The Nigerian's extraordinary frame made him perfect for the role that would define the film. Badejo brought a dancer's grace to the creature, moving across the Nostromo with unsettling elegance.
That single performance became legendary. Alien revolutionized science fiction cinema. The film spawned sequels, prequels, and a franchise that endures decades later. Badejo's portrayal of the Alien remains the most iconic version of the creature. It was his sole acting credit.
Yet Badejo never chased Hollywood stardom after that one transformative role. He remained largely out of the spotlight. His life was brief. On December 22, 1992, he died at just 39 years old. The Nigerian artist who gave the world one of cinema's most unforgettable monsters was gone too soon.
Today, Bolaji Badejo's name lives in film history textbooks. Film scholars still analyze his performance. The Alien he created—sinuous, terrifying, almost balletic—remains the standard against which all others are measured. A Nigerian visual artist became part of global popular culture through a single, perfectly executed role.
His legacy transcends that one film. Badejo proved that African talent could command the biggest stages. He showed that a Nigerian could help shape cinema itself. That remains his gift to the world.
